USB 3.0 launched in 2008 at 5 Gbps — a massive leap over USB 2.0's 480 Mbps. The name made sense: version three of the standard. Then USB 3.1 arrived with a 10 Gbps variant, and instead of leaving the original USB 3.0 alone, the USB-IF renamed it. USB 3.0 became USB 3.1 Gen 1. Same speed. New name. No upgrade. USB signal integrity degrades over distance, and the marketing never mentions it. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20 Gbps has a maximum reliable passive cable length of roughly 1 meter. You buy a 2-meter cable rated for 20 Gbps. You plug it in. Your device negotiates at 10 or 5 Gbps because the signal can't hold at 20 Gbps over that length. USB Power Delivery supports up to 240 watts in its latest specification. Here's what your cable packaging says: "USB-C Power Delivery supported." Here's what that tells you: nothing. PD at 5 watts is still PD. PD at 240 watts is also PD. The same phrase covers a 4,700% performance range.

VerdictHow to actually buy the right cable
- For data speed: Look for "USB 3.2 Gen 2" (10 Gbps), "Gen 2x2" (20 Gbps), or "USB4" (40 Gbps). If it just says "USB 3.2" with no Gen number, assume the worst.
- For charging: Look for the wattage number explicitly — 100W, 140W, 240W. "Power Delivery supported" alone is meaningless.
